In 2019, an estimated 690,000 people died from AIDS-related illnesses worldwide, with tuberculosis, cryptococcal meningitis and severe bacterial infections the main causes. Sub-Saharan Africa carries over 80% of the global HIV burden. Even with evolving diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, one in three people living with HIV present to care with advanced HIV.
This session will focus on the state of the HIV epidemic in Sub Saharan Africa, highlighting how stakeholders believe unacceptably high deaths can be ended. Our session will showcase implementation of existing technologies and strategies as a key neglected area for ending AIDS-related deaths. Progress and gaps in R&D for AHD will also be presented. The session will end with a multi-disciplinary panel including participants from WHO, Ministries of Health, MSF and civil society to brainstorm on the way forward to ending a four decade-old pandemic.
