The emergence of drug resistance limits available treatment options for HIV patients. The onset of comorbidities and concomitant medications could complicate HIV care by contributing to polypharmacy, interactions, side effects, and suboptimal adherence. In order to ensure sustained HIV-RNA suppression in these HIV patients and to improve current antiretroviral treatment regimens in the fight against multi-drug resistant strains, new drugs are needed.
The recent availability of new drugs, with novel mechanisms of action, requires a renewed attention to and awareness of an increasing group of HIV patients with limited treatment options. This brings an educational need for health care professionals managing these patients in terms of adherence, resistance, ageing, comorbidities & polypharmacy, as well as the medical educational need for updating their knowledge and expertise on existing and newly available antiretroviral therapeutics for optimizing treatment of these HIV patients.
